I'm Mary-Catherine. Mother of two sons and a daughter, wife of Econ Man, a frequent traveler full of wonderlust. By day a profoundly exhausted Domestic Engineer: a cook, a referee, a psychologist, a nanny, a house cleaner, a computer operator, teacher, personal chauffer, laundress, interior designer, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, handy gal, groundskeeper, nutritionist, RN, logistics analyst, and day care teacher--all in all CEO of my domain. In a former life, a painter, a sculptor, a poet, a designer, a reader, an academic. But a woman who spurns definition by just one. My blogs chart our family's journeys around the world, searching out those unbelievable moments, both mundane and profound, that make me so happy to be alive.

The Travel Day...again

For most people travel days are usually fairly uneventful and boring. But not for us McAlvanys. There's always something to keep us on our toes--and it's usually our kids.
It all began at 5 AM when we awoke to drive 2 1/2 hours from St-Prex to Zurich. Then began our 13 hour flight from Zurich to Singapore filled with movies, more movies, a sometimes fussy and mostly sleepless one year old, a three year old who would not sleep, and two sleep-deprived and very weary parents. The only rested person in our family when we got off our flight was Declan. He had had about 4 actual, real hours of sleep, while the rest of us just dreamed of it. And when we landed at 6:15 AM Monday morning, Econ Man and I were sure it was going to be a very long day. And it was.

We took a cab to our apartment for the week. I had forgotten how clean and orderly everything is here. Even the cabs. It's the the Switzerland of Asia. When we got here it was 8. Room not ready till 10. All I wanted was to crash and crash hard. We had breakfast at the free buffet. Then we crashed in the cameraman's room--all of us strung out on the floor. Really funny. As soon as our room was ready we crawled into beds and passed out. It was glorious sleep. We woke about 2:30 PM. Decided we shouldn't sleep all day. Part of jetlag strategy. So we went on a trek in search of groceries.

When Econ Mans parents arrived we grabbed a can and headed for dinner in Little India.

I was so hungry and Indian would be just the thing to help me sleep tonight. Ate a ginormous meal. So good. A little walk through Little India ramadan fast was broken tonight so the streets were busy and restaurants full all the gold jewelry shops were open at 10:30 in the evening.

Everybody buys gold at the end of Ramadan. Don't really know why. Hunted forever for a cab. And now to sleep. To sleep, perchance to dream.
