So if there is one word that summarizes the way we live it is most definitely "flexibility". Our second trip around the world began with a 7 hour stint in the Denver airport with a 2 1/2 year old and a 4 month old. So why should this adventure begin differently? After our flight out of Durango to Denver was cancelled we were formed we wouldn't get out until the following day after noon. And since, once I'm in motion and feel the momentum, I'm much less likely to put on the breaks, go home, and psych myself up to start again another day--I decided to spend my day in the car. We drove to Vegas, while Econ Man and his associate decided to book an entirely different ticket and fly on a prop plane out of Farmington to Phoenix and then on to Las Vegas. He had to speak that evening at 6, and driving wouldn't get him in until 9:00 pm. And since buying new tickets the "day of" is like highway robbery, we decided I'd be f l e x i b l e and drive the 9 1/2 hours to Vegas.

I've only done this one other time and I can't say this time was any more exciting. Our helper, Carolina, came on the Vegas part of our trip, so at least I had stimulating conversation to carry me through the long, boring sections of the desert. While driving through the border country of Utah and Arizona, we chewed on the fringe Mormons and polygamy That populate these "badlands". Colorado City being the most famous outpost for renegade polygamist Mormons. We chatted about the HBO show Big Love and reality show Sister Wives that have popularized much interest in the topic of polygamy. It at least kept us awake and engaged on our epic journey!

Tess didn't help the drive. She fussed a good portion of it and just generally had a bad attitude. I think that may bode I'll for the long air flights ahead of us!

About 9:30 pm we came over the crest of a dark mountain and saw in the distance a floating plane of light in the middle of nowhere. We had made it to Las Vegas--the most bizarre, sinful and unnatural placative ever visited. And I can't say I'm so excited about being here--especially with kids. But I've done it before and organize our time around children friendly pursuits--of which Vegas seems to have alot. I keep them away from the filthy boards as much as humanly possible, away from as much of the reality of sin city as I am able. Seeing the city alight, floating in the blackness reminded me of what Sodom and Gomorrah might look like today if it hadn't been wiped from the face of the earth.
