I'm Mary-Catherine. Mother of two sons and a daughter, wife of Econ Man, a frequent traveler full of wonderlust. By day a profoundly exhausted Domestic Engineer: a cook, a referee, a psychologist, a nanny, a house cleaner, a computer operator, teacher, personal chauffer, laundress, interior designer, administrative assistant, bookkeeper, handy gal, groundskeeper, nutritionist, RN, logistics analyst, and day care teacher--all in all CEO of my domain. In a former life, a painter, a sculptor, a poet, a designer, a reader, an academic. But a woman who spurns definition by just one. My blogs chart our family's journeys around the world, searching out those unbelievable moments, both mundane and profound, that make me so happy to be alive.

The Red Eye to Hong Kong

Our day began much too early. We planned ahead but still ended up waking early at 3 am. Our flight left at 5:20, and even giving ourselves that window of time left us no time for error. We were the last on our plane and literally pulled back from the gate 2 minutes after sitting down. Whew!

The only bright part of the morning was an empty, beautiful new airport. There's something memorable starting your day in an almost peopleless airport.

Got to Hong Kong to be welcomed by masked airport workers who used an infrared scanner to take Tess' temperature. Still bewildered by this one. But I remember when we came here in '09 they did the same to Dashel, who was 4 months at the time.
As we were standing in the line at passport control Dash busts out with his urgent need to gontonthe bathroom. The passport officer hurried Dash and I's passport through first so I could find a toilet for Dash. We almost didn't make it to the toilet.

I remember Hong Kong. It's unforgettable. Even the drive from the airport on Lantau Island to Hong Kong Island I remember well.

Declan was exhausted. We all wanted to pass out.

The view from our room at the Grand Hyatt on Hong Kong Island. We all passed out for about three hours when we got to the hotel.

We spent the evening playing at the playground next to the hotel. It was amazing. We had the place to ourselves, which is unusual for a place as packed full of people as Hong Kong.

After burning some nap-induced energy and a good swim we decided to head to a place we'd eaten at during our trip in '09--The Pawn. The Pawn is housed in a great old colonial building. And the food is really great. We sat outside to buffer our kids' noise. It was terrific. Great view. And we didn't have to keep shushing the kids all through dinner.
